About Villages in Telangana

Telangana comprises 20,888 villages spread across 34 districts, forming the foundation of India's rural landscape and the Panchayati Raj system of democratic governance. These villages represent the grassroots level of administration where the majority of the state's rural population resides, engaged primarily in agriculture, allied activities, and increasingly in rural non-farm enterprises.

Each village in Telangana is governed by a Gram Panchayat, a constitutionally mandated local self-government institution established under the 73rd Constitutional Amendment. The Gram Panchayat is headed by an elected Sarpanch (also called Gram Pradhan or Village President in different regions) and includes elected ward members representing different sections of the village. This three-tier Panchayati Raj system - Gram Panchayat (village), Panchayat Samiti (block), and Zilla Parishad (district) - ensures participatory democracy and decentralized planning at the grassroots level.

Villages in Telangana are the primary delivery points for government welfare schemes including MGNREGA for rural employment, Public Distribution System (PDS) for food security, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana for rural housing, and various pension schemes for senior citizens, widows, and persons with disabilities. The Gram Sabha (village assembly of all adult voters) meets periodically to approve development plans, monitor scheme implementation, and ensure social audit of public expenditure.
