About Cities in Telangana

Telangana has 24 cities distributed across 24 districts, representing the highest tier of urban local governance in India's administrative hierarchy. These cities are the engines of economic growth, hosting major industries, commercial establishments, educational institutions, healthcare facilities, and government offices that serve not just their own residents but the entire surrounding region.

Each city in Telangana is governed by a Municipal Corporation (for larger cities) or Municipal Council (for smaller cities), established under state municipal laws. The Corporation is headed by an elected Mayor who serves as the ceremonial head, while the Municipal Commissioner (usually an IAS officer) handles administrative functions. Cities are divided into wards, each represented by an elected Councillor, ensuring democratic representation at the local level.

Municipal Corporations in Telangana are responsible for a wide range of urban services including water supply and distribution, sewerage and drainage systems, solid waste management, urban roads and street lighting, building plan approvals and urban planning, property tax assessment and collection, public health services and hospitals, fire services, parks and recreational facilities, and registration of births, deaths, and marriages. Cities also house district-level government offices, courts, and specialized services like passport offices, making them essential service centers for the entire district.
