About Tithi Calculator

This Tithi Calculator helps you find the Tithi (lunar day), Nakshatra (star), Rashi (Moon sign), and Naligai (Tamil time) for any date and time. Whether you're planning a wedding, housewarming, or any auspicious ceremony, knowing the Tithi is essential in Vedic astrology and Tamil traditions.

What is Tithi?

Tithi (திதி) is the lunar day in the Hindu calendar. It is calculated from the angular distance between the Moon and Sun. A lunar month has 30 tithis:

  • Shukla Paksha (waxing moon): 15 tithis from New Moon to Full Moon
  • Krishna Paksha (waning moon): 15 tithis from Full Moon to New Moon

Each tithi spans 12 degrees of Moon-Sun separation and is associated with a deity. Some tithis like Chaturthi, Ashtami, Navami, and Chaturdashi are called Rikta Tithis and are generally considered inauspicious for starting new ventures.

Understanding Naligai

Naligai (நாழிகை) is the traditional Tamil time measurement system that has been used for centuries. Unlike modern clock time, Naligai is calculated from sunrise:

  • 1 day (sunrise to sunrise) = 60 Naligai
  • 1 Naligai = 24 minutes
  • 1 Naligai = 60 Vinadi
  • 1 Vinadi = 24 seconds

The Naligai value is universal - it's the same calculation anywhere in the world. However, the clock time corresponding to a particular Naligai varies by location because sunrise time differs.

Naligai Time Periods

Naligai Period Tamil Name
0-15 Morning காலை (Kaalai)
15-30 Afternoon மத்தியானம் (Mathiyanam)
30-45 Evening மாலை (Maalai)
45-60 Night இரவு (Iravu)

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Select your location - Choose your city from the dropdown. This is important because sunrise time varies by location.
  2. Select the date - Pick the date for which you want to find the Tithi.
  3. Optionally select time - If you want Naligai for a specific time, enter it. Otherwise, it shows values at sunrise.
  4. Click Calculate - The results will show Tithi, Nakshatra, Rashi, and Naligai.

Significance of Tithi in Hindu Traditions

Tithi plays a crucial role in Hindu religious and cultural practices:

  • Festivals: Many festivals are celebrated on specific tithis (e.g., Ekadashi, Purnima, Amavasya)
  • Muhurtha: Auspicious timing for ceremonies considers tithi among other factors
  • Vratas: Fasting days are often determined by tithi
  • Shraddha: Ancestor rituals are performed on specific tithis

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Tithi?

Tithi is a lunar day in the Hindu calendar, calculated from the angular distance between the Moon and Sun. There are 30 tithis in a lunar month: 15 in Shukla Paksha (waxing moon) and 15 in Krishna Paksha (waning moon). Each tithi spans 12 degrees of Moon-Sun separation.

What is Naligai?

Naligai is the traditional Tamil time measurement system. One day (sunrise to sunrise) equals 60 Naligai, and 1 Naligai equals 24 minutes. Each Naligai is divided into 60 Vinadi (1 Vinadi = 24 seconds). Unlike clock time, Naligai is calculated from local sunrise.

How is Tithi calculated?

Tithi is calculated from the elongation (angular distance) between the Moon and Sun. When this elongation is 0-12 degrees, it's Shukla Pratipada; 12-24 degrees is Dwitiya, and so on. Each 12-degree segment represents one tithi.

Why does Tithi vary by location?

The tithi at any moment is the same worldwide because it depends on Moon-Sun positions which are universal. However, the start and end times of tithi vary by timezone. Also, which tithi falls on a calendar date depends on sunrise time, which varies by location.

Which Tithis are auspicious?

Most tithis are considered auspicious. However, Rikta Tithis (Chaturthi, Ashtami, Navami, and Chaturdashi) are generally avoided for starting new ventures. Purnima (Full Moon) and Amavasya (New Moon) have special significance for specific rituals.
