About Tamil Astrology

Tamil astrology (தமிழ் ஜோதிடம்) is a branch of Hindu/Vedic astrology that has been practiced in Tamil Nadu for thousands of years. It uses the Panchangam (five elements) to determine auspicious and inauspicious timings for daily activities.

The five elements of Panchangam are: Tithi (lunar day), Nakshatra (lunar mansion), Yoga (Sun-Moon combination), Karana (half-tithi), and Vara (weekday). These elements help determine the quality of time for various activities.

Why Check Rahu Kalam?

Rahu Kalam (ராகு காலம்) is a 90-minute inauspicious period each day ruled by the shadow planet Rahu. During this time, it is advised to avoid starting new ventures, signing contracts, or beginning journeys. However, routine activities can continue normally.

What is Nalla Neram?

Nalla Neram (நல்ல நேரம்) means "good time" in Tamil. It refers to auspicious periods during the day when planetary influences are favorable. Starting important work during Nalla Neram is believed to bring success and prosperity.

How to Use These Tools

  1. Select your city: Timing calculations are location-specific as they depend on sunrise and sunset times. Choose your nearest city for accurate results.
  2. Check daily: Rahu Kalam and other timings change every day based on sunrise/sunset times and the day of the week.
  3. Plan accordingly: Avoid starting important activities during Rahu Kalam or Yamagandam. Use Nalla Neram for auspicious beginnings.
  4. Verify with sunrise: All timings are calculated from actual sunrise time for your location, ensuring accuracy.

What activities should I avoid during Rahu Kalam?

Avoid starting new ventures, signing important contracts, making major purchases, beginning construction work, or starting long journeys. Routine activities, ongoing work, and emergencies are not affected.

How accurate are these calculations?

Our calculations use astronomical algorithms (SunCalc and astronomy-engine libraries) for precise sunrise/sunset and planetary positions. We use Lahiri Ayanamsa, the standard for Indian astrology. Timings are accurate to within a few minutes.
